there is no limit to what the orchestra can do – it is the embodiment of human creativity, and with endless amounts of expression at its disposal, an orchestra can transport us to realms beyond the tangible.
Dark, brooding, desolate, foreboding hopelessness. I started with moody synthesised sounds and pensive wandering grand piano musings, but decided an orchestra was needed in order to create a dramatic, all-encompassing mood.
The start of the piece is uncertain – someone is driving in the middle of the night to somewhere unknown, but as we go along things start looking up. A kind of it’s-always-darkest-before-the-dawn situation. I used flutes and trumpets to really lighten the mood and bring some positivity in contrast to the sombre strings.
